Harbour offers a team of experienced and proven investment practitioners that have extensive experience in managing money in global and Australasian markets. The senior members in the equity team have worked together for over 10 years at a global investment management firm prior to establishing Harbour. The fixed interest team offer a complementary blend of over 20 years of managing local fixed interest portfolios and over 15 years of global fixed interest analysis and policymaking. This experience provides a solid understanding of markets, security analysis and portfolio construction and helps deliver favourable risk adjusted returns for clients.

Andrew Bascand

Managing Director, Portfolio Manager

Andrew has responsibility for all Australasian equity portfolios. Prior to joining Harbour Asset Management, Andrew spent 10 years with AllianceBernstein (NZ) as Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager responsible for portfolio construction of all Australasian mandates. In that role Andrew and his team were consistently recognised by the industry for excellence in funds management. Andrew has more than 27 years investment management experience in roles with the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, Bank of England, AMP and with Merrill Lynch Global Asset Management (UK) as Managing Director of Global Equity Products. With Merrill Lynch, Andrew managed global equity accounts for pension funds in Japan, Sweden, Spain, Chile, England, the US, Germany and South Africa.

Kevin Bennett

Director, Head of Research

Kevin is a senior Research Analyst, providing company analysis and modelling. In particular, Kevin leads Harbour’s fundamental company and corporate governance research. Prior to joining Harbour Asset Management, Kevin was employed by AllianceBernstein New Zealand as a Research Analyst in Australasian Equities. In this role Kevin was responsible for equities research with an emphasis on Telco's, media, transport, forestry, healthcare and cyclical stocks. Kevin was previously a Director and Head of Telecommunications Research (Australasia) at Deutsche Bank. Kevin has over 25 years of investment management experience with such companies as AMP Society, Doyle Paterson Brown, Fay Richwhite and Bankers Trust New Zealand.

Mark Brown

Director, Fixed Interest Portfolio Manager

Mark's primary responsibilities lie with the fixed income management process, incorporating credit research, portfolio construction and risk management. Mark has an established history providing care for clients and their fixed income portfolios; for 16 years Mark led the fixed income portfolio management team in a continuous capacity at the business that evolved as National Mutual Funds Management, AXA and then AllianceBernstein. He has produced consistently sound and competitive investment performance throughout, most notably during the 2007-2009 global financial crisis. Mark has expertise across the breadth of fixed income disciplines, including risk management, economics, credit and quantitative analysis. Mark began his portfolio management career at Credit Suisse Asset Management, London, in 1992, having previously worked for DFC New Zealand and the Bank of New Zealand.

Anne-Marie Carian

Anne-Marie leads the client reporting function to ensure clients regular reporting requirements are met for both equities and fixed interest. Anne-Marie is also responsible for providing consultant firms performance data and to ensure relevant research pieces prepared by the investment team are distributed to interested clients. Prior to taking time off to raise a family, Anne-Marie was employed at AllianceBernstein as a Client Relations Associate, where she provided client reporting and servicing for the institutional client base. Anne-Marie began her career with the Bank of New Zealand before travelling to the UK where she worked for JP Morgan Chase in Custody. Anne-Marie holds a Bachelor of Science and a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from Massey University.

Christian Hawkesby

Executive Director, Head of Fixed Income and Economics

Christian has responsibility for Harbour's fixed income business. Prior to joining Harbour, Christian spent 9 years at the Bank of England, where he held a number of senior positions, including Head of Market Intelligence, Chief Manager of the Sterling Markets Division, and Private Secretary to the Deputy Governor. While in the Bank of England's dealing room, Christian was responsible for analysis and research, relationships with London and Edinburgh asset managers, designing and launching the special Sterling Corporate Bond Scheme, and advising on the Bank's purchase of £200bn UK government bonds for quantitative easing. Christian began his career at the RBNZ in 1998, where he spent time as both an analyst in the NZ cash, fixed income and FX markets, and as an economist running the RBNZ macroeconomic model.

Jody Kaye

As Chief Operating Officer, Jody is tasked with the management of the Harbour Asset Management business to ensure we deliver high quality and innovative investment solutions for our clients. This involves product development, meeting regulatory requirements and managing the outsourced fund administration, Jody also has responsibility for leading the Client Services team. Harbour prides itself on our client focus and providing our clients with timely and relevant communications. This commitment helps us strengthen our client relationships and builds trust. Jody has had roles with First NZ Capital Investment Management Limited, Arcus Investment Management, ING (NZ) Ltd, BT funds Management Ltd (NZ) and ANZ Wealth Management, providing him with over 20 years of experience in the funds management industry.

Kendal Law

Kendal will be focusing on providing investment and marketing support for the T. Rowe Price Global Equity Growth Fund with consultants, trustees and wholesale investors in NZ. Kendal has over 17 years’ experience with global investment banks providing equity analyst, research sales and account management expertise. Prior to joining Harbour, Kendal was with Credit Suisse Securities for 12 years based both in London and Hong Kong, as a Director in Research Sales with a focus on Institutional equity clients. In this role Kendal was responsible for both Global and Asia Pacific equity clients.

Susanna Lee

Susanna has primary responsibility for the equity team’s quantitative research program and manages the Harbour New Zealand Equity Advanced Beta Fund. Susanna is also responsible for Harbour’s currency research and strategy and provides some equity research. Susanna was previously employed by AMP Capital as a Quantitative Investment Analyst, where she provided quantitative analysis, modelling and risk analytics for portfolio risk and asset allocation decision making across; equities, fixed interest, property and infrastructure, commodities and foreign exchange. Susanna began her career in 2008 at AXA Global Investors where she was responsible for authorising Unit Pricing across all AXA New Zealand domestic and international portfolios, portfolio and market analysis and some foreign exchange research and execution. Susanna holds a Dean's List Award for her Bachelor of Business Studies with Honours in Finance.

Declan McKeefry

Declan’s role focuses on providing investment operations and administrative support for both the equity and fixed income teams. In particular, Declan is responsible for stock and cash reconciliations, compliance, portfolio attribution and performance reporting. Prior to joining Harbour, Declan held the role of Client Services Manager at Wellington-based Implemented Investment Solutions. This role spanned a wide range of functions including day-to-day fund operations, client relationship management and sales. Declan holds a BA from Victoria University of Wellington.

Cheryll Morales

Cheryll’s role focuses on providing investment operations and administration support for the equity and fixed income teams in Harbour’s Wellington office. Cheryll has over 7 years of experience with global custodial banks covering fund management, investment and treasury operations, risk management and project management. Prior to joining Harbour, Cheryll worked with JP. Morgan Chase for 2 years, with a focus on cash management and forecasting, FX modelling and cash and stock reconciliations. Cheryll also implemented risk control polices and process improvements across the business. Under this role, Cheryll was responsible for JP Morgan clients in the EMEA region. Prior to JP Morgan, Cheryll also worked at UnionBank of the Philippines managing a team responsible for the settlement, accounting and reporting of money market, fixed income, equity and foreign exchange activities for the trust and asset management clients. Cheryll holds a Masters’ Degree of Applied Mathematics in Finance.

Simon Pannett CFA

An investment analyst in the fixed interest team, Simon covers investment research and portfolio implementation. In addition, Simon makes a wider contribution across the firm towards client servicing and account management, and new product and business development. Prior to joining Harbour, Simon was a research analyst at Investment Solutions UK in London. He started his investment career at AXA Global Investors in Wellington, where he was part of the multi-manager investment team. As part of that role, Simon worked closely with a range of retail, wholesale and superannuation clients. Simon holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Economics from Otago University, where he was awarded the William Emery Scholarship. He is also a CFA Charterholder.

Sophie Parlane

Marketing Coordinator

Sophie joined the Harbour team in 2016 to drive projects in marketing and communications, including digital engagement and events coordination. She is also Harbour’s resident wordsmith and brand champion. Prior to joining Harbour, Sophie was a Project Coordinator at Young Enterprise Trust, with experience in content creation, digital communications and events management (including as 2IC Events Manager for the NZ Business Hall of Fame). She holds a Bachelor of Arts from VUW in Political Science and Social Policy (with a minor in Media Studies), and is currently working on a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration (Communications) through Massey.

Oyvinn Rimer

Oyvinn is responsible for equity research and ratings on the agriculture, resource, and oil & gas sectors. Oyvinn also supports the Harbour team in implementation, portfolio construction, and quantitative research. Prior to joining Harbour Asset Management, Oyvinn was employed by AllianceBernstein New Zealand for 2 years as Assistant Research Analyst. Oyvinn holds his Master of Commerce from the University of Canterbury with first class Honours in Finance.

Shane Solly CFA

Shane has worked in financial markets for over 20 years and has a wealth of experience in managing client’s money over many market cycles. Prior to joining Harbour, Shane was Head of Equities for Mint Asset Management for seven years. Shane has also gained experience with senior roles at Goldman Sachs, ING (NZ) Ltd and AXA Ltd. In these roles Shane has helped manage client’s money across high conviction NZ and Australasian equity portfolios and listed property portfolios. Shane is well respected in markets and has helped deliver impressive investment performance for his clients over many years.

Craig Stent CFA

Craig is portfolio manager for the Harbour Equity Income Fund. As part of this responsibility Craig provides portfolio management oversight and assists in managing the relationship with key outside parties such as Trustee Executors and Bloomberg. Furthermore, Craig provides equity research and ratings on retail, utility, energy and property sectors. Prior to joining Harbour Asset Management, Craig was employed by AllianceBernstein New Zealand for seven years, originally as a Client Relations Associate before moving to Assistant Research Analyst in July 2004. Furthermore, Craig has previously worked for the Bank of New Zealand, Chase Global Investor Services (London) and the Bank of Ireland in roles responsible for monitoring and controlling daily cash activity and the management of support staff for Foreign Exchange Trading Desks. Craig is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter holder.

Jorge Waayman

Jorge started at Harbour as an intern in 2016. He completed his (first class) BCom (Hons) degree in Finance at Victoria University prior to joining Harbour.

Toni Wood

Toni joined the Harbour team in July 2014. Her primary role is to drive the client servicing area. She ensures that clients reporting and information needs are met for both equities and fixed interest, and looks after AML requirements and client onboarding. She also provides consultant firms with performance data. Toni provides a central communications touchpoint for all current and prospective Harbour clients Before joining the team at Harbour, Toni worked for AXA/AMP for 7 years in the Sales and Distribution area.

Debbie Bourne

Debbie Bourne has 15 years’ experience in the Financial Services Industry. Business experience ranges from NZX Participant firms, Private Wealth Management, Funds Management and Insurance. Over the last five years Debbie has specialised in Risk and Compliance Management including the responsibilities of AML/CFT Compliance Manager, NZX Compliance Manager and Privacy Officer. Prior to joining First NZ Capital Securities Limited in February 2015 Debbie was the Compliance and Risk Manager at JBWere (NZ) Pty Limited. Debbie was a first line of defence Compliance and Operational Risk manager at Westpac NZ Limited in the Private, Wealth and Insurance area. Debbie is an NZX Adviser, has trained as an Authorised Financial Adviser assessor and has completed her ACI Associate Intensive Risk and Compliance course. Other experience includes Senior Compliance Officer at ASB Securities Limited and Office Manager at Direct Broking Limited. Debbie is responsible for Harbour Asset Management and FNZC’s Compliance function, which includes working with the business to ensure that legal and regulatory requirements, as well as international best practise standards, are understood and adhered to across the business. She leads a compliance team to deliver compliance education, delivery of regulatory change, liaising with the regulators and providing an independent oversight of internal controls.

Kris Renouf

Kris joined First NZ Capital in 2004. Kris has over 15 years experience offshore and in New Zealand in the banking and securities industry. His career history includes Deloitte, BNZ, UBS and Royal Bank of Scotland. He is responsible for the treasury and financial management and reporting of the firm. Kris is a member of both the Executive Management Committee and the Investment Risk Committee. He is also a member of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.

Wayne Stechman

Independent Director, Chair of Audit Committee

Wayne is a Director and Shareholder of Harbour Asset Management, with an extensive background of over 30 years experience in the financial services and funds management industry. Wayne retired from Tower Asset Management Limited in 2008 after 18 years as portfolio manager and head of Australasian equities. Prior to that Wayne worked for a leading share broking firm as an investment advisor/portfolio manager. His other current roles include Trustee of National Provident Fund and panel member of Financial Services Complaints Ltd.

Bill Trotter

Director, Harbour Asset Management and Executive Chairman, FNZC

Bill is a director of Harbour Asset Management. Bill is also Chairman of First NZ Capital, appointed in 2002. He was previously Chief Executive of the firm and a Managing Director of Credit Suisse First Boston. Bill has a wide range of experience in capital markets and corporate transactions.

Graeme Wong

Independent Chairman, Harbour Asset Management

One of two independent board members, Graeme is also Chairman of the Board at Harbour. Graeme founded and was Executive Chairman of Southern Capital Ltd, which became Hirequip NZ Ltd. He has extensive directorship experience, including at New Zealand Farming Systems Uruguay Limited, Sealord Group Limited, Tasman Agriculture Limited, Magnum Corporation Limited, Work Insurance, and alternate director at Air New Zealand. He is a current Director of Tourism Holdings Limited, Areograph Limited, Precinct Properties New Zealand Limited and shareholder and Director of Southern Capital Partners (NZ) Limited. Furthermore, he is a member of the Trust Board of Samuel Marsden Collegiate School and Member of the Management Board of The Bible Society Development (New Zealand) Incorporated.

Richard Young

Harbour Asset Management Director and FNZC Director

Richard joined First NZ Capital in 1994 (the firm was then known as CS First Boston) and has over 20 years experience in the New Zealand and overseas banking and securities industry. Richard is also a member of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants.
